What does "Serif" mean? Appropriately for a company that specializes in the development of publishing and design software, Serif's name is taken from a longstanding typographical term that refers to a short line at the end of the main strokes of a character. Generally, typefaces (fonts) are described as either "Serif" or "Sans Serif" ("Sans" is the French word for "without"). Sans Serif typefaces, (the best known examples probably being Arial and Helvetica) are normally used for headlines and subheads, whereas Serif typefaces (the best known examples being Garamond & Times New Roman) have a more flowing, written look and are often used for body copy. Examples of Serif & Sans Serif Characters: ![]() When did it all begin? Serif was founded in 1987 by a small team of software engineers who wanted to create the first low-cost alternative to the high-end Desktop Publishing (DTP) packages that were then the preserve of professional users. Microsoft Windows was in its infancy, but, correctly predicting that it would become widespread among PC users, Serif used this as the platform to develop a low-cost easy-to-use DTP package that would provide most of the functionality of the expensive high-end software that dominated the market. Why is Serif's Head Office in Nottingham? Nottingham, the regional capital of the East Midlands, has an international reputation for many things - from fine lace to football, from Robin Hood and the Sheriff to household names such as the Boots Company, Raleigh Cycles, Capital One, and Serif! Nottingham's highly respected universities and colleges, its cosmopolitan atmosphere and diversity of cultures, along with its proximity to main motorway and rail links made it an ideal choice for a growing software company. Plus, the fact that Nottingham boasts some of the best pubs and clubs in the UK and that the company's founders lived locally had something to do with it! Who released the first sub-£100 DTP package for Windows? Yes you've guessed it, Serif is proud to have staked its place in software history with its 1991 release of PagePlus 1.0 - the first sub-£100 DTP package for Windows 3.0 and a head-on challenge to high-end products. Current customers will know that the desire to produce professional solutions at ground-breaking prices continues to be a driving force as Serif moves forward. Who develops the software? Serif has an in-house team of developers dedicated to creating new products, new features and updates for our software range. Based at our Nottingham, Uk, head office we are proud to have some of the most highly skilled software professionals in the business and it is the combination of their innovative programming and feedback we get from our users that makes Serif software so popular and successful, worldwide. |
