Quality loss caused by digital image magnification is a common problem for DTP professionals, Internet hobbyists and digital camera owners.
Enlarging digital low-resolution images without dedicated software can lead to a variety of undesirable side effects including out of focus images and serrated edges.
PhotoZoom Pro 2 is a dedicated software pacakge designed to improve the ease, speed and quality of image enlargement.
Using patentented S-Spline interpolation technology, PhotoZoom Pro 2 is able to render sharp, perfectly focused and crisp clear image magnifications, without the jagged edges, loss of detail or lack of photorealism that’s normally associated with image enlargement.
S-Spline intelligently analyses the sharpness and evenness of the original image and decides which parts of the image must be enlarged, optimally using more or fewer steps as required. The final results include images, photos and text that remain as true-to-life as possible.
Image enlargement - an example.
Take an image 400 pixels high and 300 pixels wide. The total number of pixels in this image is 120,000 (400x300). If this image is enlarged by a factor of 4 - to 1600 x 1200 pixels - 1.8 million pixels must be created.
Creation of pixels can be a timely process and a great deal of time can be spend enlarging and image of reasonable quality. What’s more, an image that looks satisfactory on-screen must often be enlarged several times to be output to a higher-resolution printer.
PhotoZoom Pro 2’s S-Spline technology speeds up this process by analysing the image to create sharp, perfectly focused and clear image magnifications.
Inteligent Interpolation
The three most common enlargements techniques are: ‘Nearest neighbour’’, ‘Bilinear’ and ‘Bicubic’ enlargement.
Nearest neighbour is the most basic form of image enlargement, simply multiplying the number of pixels. However, since this method does not take into account the colour value of surrounding pixels, the result is a very chequered looking enlargement. Bilinear and Bicubic enlargement avoid this chequered effect by taking into account the average colour value of surrounding pixels, however unlike PhotoZoom Pro 2, neither method takes into account the dynamic, or sharpness, of the colour transitions in the image, resulting in visibly jagged edges and loss of sharpness.
